The Changing Lifestyle and Its Impact

Nowadays the life style of man is changing. As the life style of man changes, the diseases that come in his body are also changing. There is a big difference between what was eaten in villages and urban areas in the past and what is eaten nowadays. Recently in India, diseases related to colorectal i.e. large intestine problems like piles, fissure, fistula, constipation and colon cancer are increasing. Out of India’s 1.3 Billion people, 36% of the population, i.e. about fifty crore people, are affected by these diseases, from newborns to the elderly.

There are many reasons for the lifestyle of these patients. The main reason for this is the food patterns we eat, how we can prevent these diseases from coming before the human being and what kind of life style we should follow.

Preventive Measures for Colorectal Health

1. Maintain Cleanliness

Use toilets regularly and avoid open defecation to prevent conditions like piles, fissures, and other hemorrhoid-related diseases. Open defecation can also spread infectious diseases.

2. Hydration

Drink at least 3 liters of water daily.

3. Exercise Regularly

Physical activity, such as working in fields, can help prevent these conditions.

4. Balanced Diet

Consume more vegetables, greens, and fruits.

5. Adequate Sleep

Ensure 6 hours of sleep daily.

6. Proper Defecation Habits

Use appropriate facilities and avoid excessive straining or delaying bowel movements.

Guideline to reduce your risk of developing Colorectal problems

1. Early Diagnosis is Key

If you are over 40, have irregular bowel movements, experience weight loss, or loss of appetite, you could be at risk of colon cancer. Do not ignore these symptoms or consult unqualified practitioners; seek immediate medical attention. About 78% of people suffering from large bowel cancer in India consult a doctor at a late stage, when the cancer has spread significantly. Do not let this happen to you or your loved ones.

2. Recognizing the Symptoms

If you notice any of the following symptoms, consult a doctor immediately:
– Blood in your stool
– Burning sensation during bowel movements
– Painful or scratchy stool
– Discharge or pus from the anus

These could be signs of piles, fissures, fistulas, or other hemorrhoid-related conditions. Seek prompt diagnosis and treatment from a qualified specialist.

3. Beware of Fake Doctors

There are approximately 1.5 million fake doctors in India, who lack any medical qualifications and use harmful treatments, such as applying strings, acid, ash, or even animal horns to affected areas. Many patients die due to infections and complications from these unqualified practitioners. Always seek care from licensed professionals.

4. Women and Hemorrhoid-Related Conditions

Hemorrhoid-related conditions are often more prevalent among women, who may feel too embarrassed to seek help, leading to prolonged suffering. Pregnant women, in particular, should consult a doctor if they experience symptoms, as pain and complications can occur during pregnancy. Women who defecate in the open are also at higher risk of developing these conditions.
